Your view on Linux seems misinformed as well. I can understand your view on Mac if you are rarely exposed to it, however wouldn’t it be wise to do a little research before writing an article on the subject. Yes, but the people who work at CERN uses the UNIX computers for data processing and not for themselves :).įor doing a project there is no big deal in working with Linux or OS X. But wait a minute … CERN has tens of thousands of computers based on UNIX. Which are the other 20% ? I had been at CERN, NASA… and most of the laptops or desktops were using Windows… at CERN Windows XP. Sometimes I hate it but I still prefer Microsoft Windows for developing. More than 80% of the desktop computers in the world run some sort of Windows operating system.

Since Mac OS X is based on UNIX, most software packages written for BSD or Linux can be recompiled to run on it. Frankly I have never had an OS X and I don’t think it’s a huge advantage. The only people I know working on Macintosh are the web programmers who type all their source codes in a Notepad… and the second category of people are those who do video editing for TV industry.

This is also the reason why Android by far became very popular.īecause I don’t live in a very rich country, Macintosh it’s quite expensive here and there aren’t a lot of hardware distributions. Also a minimal OS version without a graphical user interface for sure it’s by far faster than one which has many services and do a lot of work in the background. This is why many of the electronic boards uses a UNIX based operating system. Having a starting price from $100-150 for just using an Windows as operating system for your electronic board it’s quite expensive if you want to sell your board in big quantities. The biggest advantage of using Linux in my humble opinion is when you are developing an electronic device with a microprocessor for commercial purposes. The answer for that question in my point of view is that any operating system is good and there is no big deal or difference in developing software for Windows, Linux or OS X. Almost every day there is somebody who ask me “Which operating system am I developing software – Windows, Linux or OS X?”.
